FAQs

(We get these a lot!)

How do you get the holsters molded like that?

Leather holsters that are fit to specific guns are wet molded.  Once a pattern is made and the leather is stitched into place, the holster is placed, for a short time, in water to soften the leather.  A mold gun, or "dummy" gun is placed in the holster and the holster shape is formed from there.  Once the leather dries, it retains that shape indefinitely.

Do you need my gun to make my holster?

In most cases, as mentioned previously, we use mold guns or dummy guns to make the holsters. These molds are made to the exact shape and size of your particular gun. The dummy guns are made from either high impact plastic or aluminum.  Molds are available for all commonly marketed handguns from a variety of vendors. On occasion, a mold is not available for a particularly unique gun, or a gun that has an aftermarket accessory. In such case, we would need the actual gun, and we understand that's usually a deal-breaker for many customers.  In that case, the gun is wrapped, sealed and cleaned afterwards.  It is never placed in a shop press and is given the utmost care.

How long does it take to make a holster?

Turn around for most orders is about 4-6 weeks.  There are several variables that will affect this.  If you want a common carry holster model that fits a design we've already made, turn around could be much faster.  As designs become more complex or materials and mold guns are less available, delivery is often delayed.  Western Rigs take longer, simply by the amount of hands-on work required.  6-8 weeks is a good rough estimate for those orders.

Why no thumb breaks (in most cases)?

Most of the holsters we make here at Work-A-Day Custom Gunleather are intended to be carried concealed and close to the body.  For this reason, most designs have an open top design: to allow easier access for the wearer and to simplify deployment.  We can and do add thumb breaks when requested.  Some designs add a thumb break as a matter of course.  Shoulder Rigs and Chest Rigs always employ a thumb break for securing guns that are carried in other-than-vertical holsters.

Are your holsters lined?

We line most holsters with a light weight suede. This serves the primary purpose of adding some degree of friction to the weapon.  Understand, almost all holsters operate on the notion that the weapon is retained, primarily by friction.  Some wear is to be expected, and the suede may mitigate some of that as well, but if you carry everyday, your gun will reflect that.  Consider it a good sign that you are becoming familiar with your gun.

What if I'm not happy with my new holster?

Our motto at Work-A-Day Custom Gunleather is:  "We make it 'til you like it"  We have delivered gear that we thought was fantastic, and looked great.  But ... the color was wrong, the rake may have been off, it's on the wrong side, we didn't include a rail when your gun has one, etc, etc, etc.  When mistakes happen or communication breaks down, we will remake whatever gun leather you ordered.  Besides, a lot of those mistakes end up on the gun show table and many are sold in pretty short order.  We don't lose out (don't feel bad on a return), and more importantly, we want you to have the gear you really want!

Ordering from

Work-A-Day

Custom Gunleather

"How does this work?"

Each item built here at Work-A-Day is custom built for your specific gun to your specifications in Style, Fit and Finish.  The prices for each product listed are general prices, and may go up (or down) depending on some variable criteria (particularly in the Truly Custom section).

Our common color finishes are Oil (light, natural brown), Chocolate and Black.  There are examples of these colors on the product photos.  We can accommodate custom color requests as well, in most cases.

Turn around time is 4-6 weeks, on most orders.  Western and Truly Custom items carry a longer turn around, usually 6-8 weeks. If there will be a delay in your order, we will try to address that during the initial order process.  Most orders require payment at the time of order.

The best way to order from Work-A-Day is to call 330-416-0625 or eMail us at workadaycg@gmail.com.  Once we receive your order, we will contact you to go over specifics and verify gun/fit/finish requests.

... and after the purchase.

I take care to provide you with quality custom gun leather that meets my high standards as well as yours.  Keep in mind that newly worked leather is often “stiff” and may seem unforgiving.  Take the time to allow your new gunleather to move and adjust to your unique fit and feel.

Belts may seem “unwilling” to fit in the keepers without some persuasion.  Slots and loops on holsters often need to be worked, perhaps with the round bar of a flat-head screwdriver.  Holsters may also need to be put on a belt BEFORE you put the belt/trousers on yourself.  Before long, you will see the gun leather still fits snug, but is much easier to put on and wear.

If, for any reason, you feel your new Work-A-Day Custom Gunleather does not meet your expectations, either for workmanship, design or material defect, do not hesitate to call me and I will do my best to “make it until you like it.”

Thank you again for your purchase,
