Random Thoughts on Carry Options

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

After scrolling past countless ads for nifty new-idea holsters, I have compiled a list of rules for your carry and storage options:

1 - Your holster should fit your SPECIFIC gun, make, model, size, caliber, configuration and options. Guns don’t come in “Large Auto” or ”Small Revolver”, neither should your holster.

2 - If you have to move the gun before you touch the gun, it’s not a holster … It’s an A.D. waiting to happen.

3 - If you store your gun under your desk, dash or next to the DOOR JAMB (really?) with a magnet, just hand your gun to the next person that walks by, it’ll be much more secure.

4 - No amount of holster nifty-ness will compensate for a general lack of familiarity. Carry - EVERYDAY. Shoot - REGULARLY. Press check prior to holster - EVERY TIME.

5- Find a carry position and design that works well for you and your platform. Daily carry can be a pain in the keister, but is worth the security it affords. Wake up 5 minutes earlier and prepare for the day … everyday. If you do, carrying will become a habit and it will become much less cumbersome … even “natural”.

6 - Some home made holsters work well... but not many. Take the example below. Friends don't let friends do this! What's sad, is some of the holsters described above are nominally better than this example. The picture on the right was my solution to the problem.

If you like leather, call me. If you’re a Kydex fan, fine (but we will pray for you).

Carry Often.

Carry Smart.

Stay Prepared.
